Typical Peer Enrollment Procedures - Etowah County Inclusive Preschool Classrooms

All parents are encouraged to take advantage of the application process for the OSR PK programs offered in Etowah County. These classrooms are located in the following schools: Carlisle Elementary, Duck Springs Elementary, Gaston Elementary, Glencoe Elementary, Highland Elementary, Ivalee Elementary and West End Elementary. Registration for these programs will open on January 15, 2019.

Office of School Readiness Pre-K Classroom Grant Registration
Children who reside within the Etowah County School District as well as those whose parent or legaguardian is employed by the Etowah County Board of Education may be registered for the random selection drawing for the school in which they are zoned to attend. For example: Pre-K Students zoned to attend Carlisle Elementary will register for Carlisle's Pre-K random selection drawing. After the random selection is held, pre-K students living outside the Etowah County School District may register for any available student slots.

*Acceptance to the OSR program is through a random selection process.  The registered applicant must meet residency requirements and complete the essential documents set forth by the program.  The registered child must be 4 on or before September 1, 2019.  Children who are eligible for kindergarten are ineligible to register.  Children will not be denied participation on the basis of income, sex, race, color, national origin, or disability.

This random selection process will occur on March 13, 2019 at 9:00am at The Etowah County Board of Education.

Once the acceptance for the OSR K4 classes has been completed, typical peer enrollment will open for the inclusive preschool classrooms. These classrooms are located in the following schools: John Jones Elementary for typical peers that are 3 on or before September 1, 2019 and three additional classrooms at Southside Elementary, Hokes Bluff Elementary, and Whitesboro Elementary for typical peers that are 4 years old on or before September 1, 2019.

Please note these classrooms are inclusive preschool classrooms with a mix of special needs children and typical peers. Behaviors may be experienced in this classroom that may not occur in a general education classroom. Typical peers are accepted into this program based on the ability to be appropriate peer models for the special needs children.  Good behavior and a knowledge of some prerequisite early education skills are needed

The application process for these locations will open on March 14, 2019 and final selection of typical peers will be made by random selection on April 9, 2019 at 9:00am at The Learning Center. Parents will be notified of acceptance no later than April 10, 2019.

The application process will include the following:

  • Required Documents
    1. Application form to be completed at initial interview
    2. Two most recent utility bills as proof of Etowah County Residency
    3. Copy of Birth Certificate as proof of age


  • Call Mrs. Denise Dasinger, Special Education Early Intervention Coordinator, at 256-442-1050 to schedule an appointment to bring these documents to her office at:

    These appointments will be held the week of April 2-5, 2019.


     Your child must be present to complete a quick screening process to assess his/ her suitability to be a peer model.


  • Once all documents are in place and the screening has been conducted, each child’s name will be placed in a random selection draw that will take place on April 9, 2019. Parents will be notified by telephone of the selection results no later than April 10, 2019. Parents will need to come by our offices at The Learning Center on April 11, 2019 to sign an acceptance form.
